LegislatureWhen the Legislature or House of Assembly is in session, usually in the spring and fall each year, MLAs have the opportunity to speak on bills, introduce resolutions (congratulations and expressions of thanks), ask questions to Government Ministers during Question Periods, introduce visitors in the Public Gallery, etc. For details, please view Resolutions, Speeches, Questions or Comments. Also, I serve on two Standing Committees of the House of Assembly1) Chair of the Standing Committee on Community Services which meets monthly to examine areas of responsibility under the Departments of Community Services, Health, Health Promotion and Protection, Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations as well as the Human Rights Commission. This Standing Committee hears submissions from organizations, calls Department officials as witnesses and sponsors annual forums on key topics, eg, 2005 Forum on Family Violence, 2006 & 2007 Forums on Poverty, 2008 Forum on Disabilities. To view meeting schedule, topics, transcripts of meetings, go to http://www.gov.ns.ca/legislature/COMMITTEES/services.html 2) Standing Committee on Internal Affairs meets when necessary to consider rules, privileges, procedures and other matters re the Legislative Library and other MLA services. |
